Day 286; The Pick-up Game

Real kids playing a real game
Life is Like a Pick-Up Game

Okay youngsters, let me hip you (I’ve been listening to Moms Mabley again,) life is like a pick-up game. Now, a pick-up game is one we played back in the day before every subdivision had its own team. Now that I think about it, it was before city’s even had subdivisions.
We’d go out and look for a kid who had a ball and then we’d see how many kids we had. We split up and form teams to play whatever game the ball would allow for. I was usually picked last, but that is not the point.
The point I’m making is that just like in life, you have to get in where you fit in. You have to make your own games, fun and joy and you have to be ready to play with people you don’t know, don’t like, and already know can’t run fast.
We hardly ever see pick-up games any more. In fact, we hardly ever see kids playing outside. Games are manufactured and we imitate something in front of a computer screen until we forget our own reality.
Today, I’d like you to do something for me and for you. Find your local community calendar and pick an even or place you have never been to and go. It can be a town hall meeting a dog party (we had one here last week,) a lecture or a play. Find something new and jump in.
You can even go outside with a ball and look for some folks to play---okay never mind. We had an adult kickball tournament once and everyone, including me suffered an injury.
The point is to go out and make your fun.

Life is waiting for you.
Be you, be fun, be in.
