Having To Think
“Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard solid
thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked
solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.

This is one
of my favorite quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King. It has been said that for
every minute of speaking time, Dr. King spent an hour in study. According to
his family, Dr. King loved to think, read and learn. As a teenager, when others
were hanging out and having fun, young Martin preferred to stay in and read.
I love so
much about the work of Dr. King, but his thinking, reading, learning self, hits
me right where I live.
I marvel at
the content of the letter from a Birmingham jail. In it there are citations and
references which even google could not to find.
We are
living in a time where we are encouraged to act first and then think. We often
scoff at those who like to think about a question before running to an answer.
Research has been replaced with search engines and any conversation of reading
is interrupted with an ad on a social media site.
It’s time to engage in solid
thinking. If we are to have a better world, we all need to sit, think, read and
learn.
Be you, be well, be
thinking.
